My First Royalty Check

I’m in a state of shock.

For over a decade, I’ve dutifully turned in my Title Submission forms, letting ASCAP know the names of every song I’ve written and recorded. I’ve done radio promo, including an expensive European campaign that got my music played on over forty commercial stations across Italy and France. I’ve made it on the CMJ RPM Chart. But not once have I received a penny in royalties.

Until today.

OK, so it’s only $61.04, and the statement shows exactly zero television and radio performances, as usual. Under “Other Music Uses” it lists 7.917 credits of “Internet – Streaming” for “Ponytail Girl.” Just the one song. I guess I got lucky and didn’t slip through the cracks for once. Still, it might be a tad premature to sign up for their direct deposit service.

I’m not sure if it’s legal for me to post a scanned check, but until I’m told otherwise, here’s the proof. John Lennon, Diane Warren, and now me!

They really exist!

Maybe in a few weeks I can write in more detail about my European radio campaign, CMJ, performing rights organizations, surveyed media, and royalties. Right now I’ve got to finish updating my web sites so that I can announce the album.

Congrats! You are one of a chosen few… For decades many have been having the same problem.
