I hope that it becomes more and more true over time, but you've definitely still got to lay the groundwork.

Fair enough! It's great to share all of the hard work and the costs and income involved. Very sobering. I'm working on something similar but it's a video DIY podcast that won't be released for another year. I have been doing a lot of research and talking to every band we play with and no one is selling enough records to cover their costs that I've met. Bands are taking their live merch sales (which is lower than ever) and using it to fund a low budget ($2,000) music video. This was from a good band signed to Island Records! The teenagers I have spoken to don't buy CDs and few actually pay for music. I won't ever make a physical CD to sell again, just for marketing purposes. Things are terrible out there. I'm compiling an email of some news I'm going to send you from all areas of the industry I have been researching.Monty

I love the honesty of this website! Licensing the Death Cab for Cutie cover was $106. The last $400 went to Maya Klein for the use of her original drawings. All of them but the cover pic were created specifically for this project, and inspired my by songs. For example, the image on the disc of the girl with the clock woven in her hair was inspired by "We're Not Getting Any Younger."

The 6-panel Digipak is $200 cheaper now. If you used Disk Makers, I see they have 1000 digipacks for $1990...where's the $844 difference going?
I figure copyright registration and barcode, but is the rest all in the cover design?

$2834 on 1000 units?<br
